Éliminatoires Coupe du Monde – Qatar 2022 || CONCACAF : Le Canada, un grand gabarit pour nos grenadiers lors de la prochaine phase.

Depuis quelques temps, la sélection haïtienne est placée sous le feu des projecteurs suite à son alléchant parcours lors de la dernière édition de Gold Cup aux États-unis en 2019. Malheureuse demi-finaliste contre le Mexique 0-1, l’équipe bicolore ne cesse depuis d’impressionner les observateurs du ballon rond en dépit de tous les moments noirs qu’a connu l’instance mère du football haïtien, la Fédération Haïtienne de Football.

Alors que les grenadiers s’engagent dans les éliminatoires de la Coupe du Monde Qatar 2022 dans la zone CONCACAF, les poulains de Jean-Jacques Pierre réalisent jusque-là un parcours sans faute. Depuis son arrivée sur le banc de la sélection nationale, le natif de Léogâne affiche un bilan très positif avec 3 matches joués pour autant de victoires soit 13 buts marqués sans en encaisser le moindre, de quoi clamer que Jean-Jacques est entrain de marquer les esprits sur ce banc. Pour la première phase des qualifications, la sélection haïtienne partageait le groupe E avec le Nicaragua, le Bélize, les Îles Turques et Caïques et la Sainte-Lucie qui malheureusement s’est désistée en raison des difficultés financières. Malgré ses deux victoires contre le Bélize (2-0) et les Îles Turques et Caïques (10-0), la sélection haïtienne n’a pas vraiment eu de test solide vu le niveau d’opposition proposé par ces adversaires. Par contre, contre le Nicaragua qui était considéré comme la formation qui pourrait empêcher aux grenadiers de jouer le tour suivant, Jeppe Simonsen et co. ont bien maîtrisé la rencontre et ont même l’emporter alors qu’un nul aurait suffit. Derrick Étienne Junior et consorts ont effectivement renversé la tendance au Stade Sylvio Cator. Une victoire combien importante pour les coéquipiers de Johny Placide qui se voient terminer leader de leur groupe avec neuf points et valider sans faire prier leur billet pour le second tour.

Haïti vs Canada, le remake du 1/4 de finales de la Gold Cup 2019

Si un peu plutôt dans la soirée du mardi 8 juin 2021 Haïti a arraché sa place qualificative pour les prochaines joutes des éliminatoires contre le Nicaragua, le scénario fût le même pour The Canucks. Dans un match des mieux classés contre le Suriname, les hommes de John Herdman ont surclassé les Suriboys en l’emportant par 4 buts à 0, notamment grâce à un triplé de l’attaquant du LOSC et originaire d’Haïti, Jonathan David, et un but du latéral gauche bavarois, Alphonso Davies. Grâce à leur victoire respectivement contre Nicaragua et Suriname, Haïti et Canada croiseront le fer dans une double confrontation les 12 et 15 Juin prochain. Cette rencontre est de fait le remake des quarts de finales de la Gold Cup 2019. Les haïtiens sont parvenus à renverser les canadiens lors de ce match à rebondissements où ils se sont imposés 3-2 dans la douleur après avoir été menés au score 0-2. Jour historique, les grenadiers ont signé leur plus grande prestation de la décennie en se qualifiant pour les demi-finales. Défaite qui a laissé un goût amer sur les lèvres des canadiens. Cette double confrontation est peut-être l’occasion pour les canadiens de prendre leur revanche contre les grenadiers qui auront à cœur de récidiver pour pouvoir atteindre le train qui partira pour le Qatar.

Le Canada compte de très bons joueurs dans son effectif qui pourraient faire du mal à Haïti notamment Jonathan David et Alphonso Davies ; ces deux hommes peuvent provoquer le tournis à n’importe quel adversaire. Si l’attaquant est souvent apprécié pour sa qualité de marquer, Davies est quant à lui aimé pour sa vitesse. En revanche, la sélection haïtienne pourra compter sur le dévouement de  certains nouveaux joueurs tels que Jeppe Simonsen, Carnejy Antoine et Don Deedson Louicius bien épaulés par Johny Placide, Hervé Bazile et Meschak Jérôme qui reviennent juste avant la rencontre.

Historicité des confrontations Haïti vs Canada

Haiti et Canada se sont déjà confrontés à plusieurs reprises et ce sont les canadiens qui ont le dessus avec 7 victoires en 11 matches contre deux pour Haïti et deux matches nuls.
La défaite canadienne 2-3 est l’opposition la plus récente de cette série.

Les deux équipes aborderont cette double confrontation avec des statistiques ahurissantes ; la sélection haïtienne a gagné huit de ses dix derniers matches pour deux matches nuls tandis que le Canada en a gagné sept et a essuyé trois défaites. Par contre, la ligne offensive du Canada a fait beaucoup plus de victimes ; ils sont parvenus à marquer 45 buts dans cette série de dix matches alors qu’Haïti n’en a marqué que 26. La défense haïtienne paviendra-t-elle à stopper les opérations monstrueuses des hommes de l’Amérique du Nord ?

Depuis près de 47 ans après une participation dans une édition de Coupe du Monde (en 1974, ndlr), la sélection haïtienne est plus que jamais motivée de revivre un tel exploit en terres qatariennes. Le match aller se jouera à Port-au-Prince pour les grenadiers ce Samedi 12 Juin 2021 avant de se rendre au Toyota Park pour le match retour le mercredi 15 juin au Canada.
